Writing - BOOK 2 - Writing Style - Intentions Language Structure
This writing resource moves on from Book 1 - Understanding the Writing Process - taking students through putting that process into action from choosing a prompt to proofreading. It focuses heavily on the deliberate selection of superpowers - Language and Structure - to support chosen genre, audience and purpose. Flip through a selection of pages from this resource here!
Note well: This resource was previously available as a 1.3 Writing (2024) resource, so you might already have it!
Parts of the student booklet:
- Visual prompts - a photo gallery for you/your students to add your own pictures.
- Written prompts - a table of preloaded prompts, plus room for the teacher and student to add their own prompt ideas.
- Possibilities - students brainstorm the possibilities (genre, angles, ideas etc) for their chosen prompt. Note, and example is provided.
- Writing intentions - students write down their prompt, and note their chosen genre, audience, purpose and point of view. The then note the language and structural superpowers they will use (or perhaps retrospectively, 'have used') Students select their language and structural superpowers using a 'superpower chart' (see SUPERPOWER CHART below).

- Checklist - this focuses heavily on clear use of the prompt and the deliberate selection of language and structural features (students must even check off a criteria stating they could point these out if asked!) as well as the development of ideas and accuracy. Despite the standards not yet being finalised, this will always be applicable!
SUPERPOWER CHART - this chart lists genre along the top row, then GROUPS of language and structural features down the right hand column (eg: figurative language, sentence structures for creative writing, syntax). Students can easily see which features they must consider to suit their writing intentions and click on the hyperlink or turn to the appropriate page to find these features. (See thumbnail for clearer picture.) Features are divided into the following sections:
- Language features - A page each on figurative language, sound devices, vocabulary, persuasive language, connectives, posh words for formal writing, tense and redundancies.
- Structural features - A page each on narration in creative writing, narration in formal writing, adding the words of others, syntax, interesting sentence beginnings, awesome sentence structures for creative writing, sentence structures for formal writing and using structure to show meaning.
- Structural features - genre specific - 'Formats' have been outlined for lead news stories, epistolary texts, essays, eulogies, instructions, letters to the editor, narrative plot structures, personal responses, poetry, reports, reviews (of film, written text, oral texts and live events), playscripts and scripts for podcasts/YouTube broadcasts.

⭐ An accompanying teacher slideshow to help you guide students with their writing process. This slideshow includes an introductory bit at the beginning, taking students through the parts of their booklet.
